In light of the current weather conditions and projected impact on the roads tomorrow, we have decided to not deliver on Tuesday this week. Check the newsletter for our updated delivery schedule for the week.

In produce news, we’re bringing in sweet potatoes from Picadilly Farm in NH, carrots, turnips, and watermelon radishes from Atlas Farm, and a mix of fall herbs from Happy Valley Organics. Jonathan’s Organic has their addictive “Munchin’ Mix” sprouts for us this week.

We’re introducing a few new add-ons this week including brown rice, Jasmine rice, and a brand new Nacho Kit!

Check out this week’s newsletter!

We’ve been working hard over here brainstorming ways to make it easier for our customers to make delicious meals from the ingredients we offer. In that spirit, we’re excited to announce that we’re rolling out a brand new line-up of add-on recipe kits over the next few months!

Next week we are introducing our first Nacho Kit add-on!

Our Nacho Kit includes everything you need to make a big batch of delicious nachos. In this kit you’ll find a bag of No. 9 Tortilla Strips, a 6-8oz package of Monterey Jack cheese from Neighborly Farms of VT, a jar of Appalachian Naturals Medium Salsa, and a recipe card. The kit serves approximately 6 people.

While our Nacho Kit covers the basics of nacho goodness, you can add veggies from your box to mix it up! We recommend adding fresh tomatoes, red onions, or bell peppers for a healthy kick. We also offer black beans and hot sauce, both natural companions of cheese nachos.

Many thanks to our summer intern Sarah for helping us develop great new recipe kits! Stay tuned for more delicious offerings from the “test kitchen” over here at Boston Organics. Happy snackin’!

A large part of our mission at Boston Organics is to provide better access to fresh, healthy foods. In honor of Food Day, we want to highlight a key local partnership that helps make this possible.

For roughly 7 years, we have worked with Food For Free to bridge the gap between our leftover produce and hungry people in our neighboring communities.

This morning we had the honor of having Sasha Purpura, the new Executive Director of Food For Free, come by our warehouse to explain what they do and where our produce donations go each week.

What is Food For Free?

The folks at Food For Free rescue fresh food that might otherwise go to waste and distribute it to the greater Boston community’s most vulnerable populations. They distribute this leftover food to 82 programs including food pantries, meal programs, emergency shelters, hospitals and clinics, and youth programs in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston.

In 2011, their produce rescue program collected and distributed over 1 million pounds of food! That’s 1 million pounds of food – food that would otherwise go to waste – feeding 25,000 people in the greater Boston community.

Approximately 70% of the food Food For Free distributes is fresh produce. By focusing on providing fresh, nutritious foods rather than junk foods, they are addressing not only short-term hunger, but diet-related disease and other long-term effects of food insecurity and poor nutrition.

Our partnership with Food For Free

Every Monday, Dennis from Food For Free comes by our warehouse to pick up whatever produce we have left over from the previous week. In 2011, these weekly donations added up to a total donation of 26,235 pounds of produce to Food For Free.

Where does our leftover produce go each week?

After Dennis picks up leftover produce from our warehouse in Charlestown on Mondays, the produce then makes its way to some of the following organizations:

  • Haven from Hunger  (Peabody) – A large percentage of our leftover produce goes to Haven from Hunger, an organization in Peabody that provides food to nearly 200 people a week.
  • Youth on Fire  (Cambridge) – The Youth On Fire drop-in center was established in the fall of 2000 to provide a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for homeless and street-involved youth. YOF has onsite hot meals, clothing, showers, and laundry facilities, as well as weekly medical care, mental health counseling, and referrals to community resources.
  • Breakthrough Cambridge  (Cambridge) – Some of our fruit donations are set aside for youth programs, including Breakthrough Cambridge. Through six years of intensive, tuition-free, out of school time programming, Breakthrough changes students’ academic trajectories and supports them along the path to four-year college.
  • Gately Youth Center  (Cambridge) – The Gately Youth Center offers homework assistance, healthy snacks, leadership development opportunities, sports leagues, arts, community service, and enrichment activities for Cambridge youth. Produce is often used for their cooking classes.
  • Outside the Lines  (Medford) – Outside the Lines Studio is an arts-based alternative day program, collectively run by artists, for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.

We’re so thankful for the hard work that Food For Free and these other community programs are doing to bring healthy foods to the people in our communities who need it most. They are truly creating a more responsible and fair food system by ‘bridging the gap between waste and want.’

Happy Food Day (week)  from your friends at Boston Organics! This week brings pie pumpkin add-ons, Massachusetts cranberries,  parsnips, turnips, kohlrabi, red potatoes, and delicata squash. We’ve also got lots of  tasty and comforting recipes to help you get familiar with some of these lesser-known veggies. Check out the newsletter!

Going out of town, or having guests in? Don’t think you can use your Boston Organics delivery? It’s easy to cancel your delivery for Thanksgiving week on our website!

If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate to call us up at 617-242-1700 or email us at [email protected]!

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Fall produce is in full swing, and we want to help you make the most of this season’s bounty. We’re handing out a Fall Produce Guide with produce profiles, cooking tips, and recipes for some of the produce you’ll see in boxes this fall. Check it out!

Cranberry season is here! We’ve got 8oz bags of fresh organic cranberries going out in boxes for the next few weeks from local MA cranberry growers. Other fall produce for this week includes Carnival squash, sweet potatoes, rosemary, kale, beets, and more. We’ve also added organic olive oil and canola oil to our add-on grocery selection! Check out the newsletter!

We know that it can be a challenge to use everything from your box in a timely manner, so we’re here to help you strategize.  With a bit of planning and a touch of creativity, you can be sure to fully utilize your produce.

Here are some tips for making the most of your produce deliveries:

1. Visualize your meals.
When you get your box, unpack it and group items that you want to put into a meal together.

Keep in mind which vegetables might wilt or age faster than others when deciding which days you’ll make each meal.  Decide which foods you’d like to cook and if there are others you’d prefer to eat raw.

2. Make Lists.
Write a list to track when you are planning to use each produce item and what meals you’d like to prepare. There are lots of great ways to convert the side of your refrigerator into an organizer.

One easy tip is to put a magnetic dry erase board on your fridge and write out what produce you receive in your box each week. This will help you plan out your meals, and it also helps ensure that you don’t forget about the broccoli or collard greens that might accidentally get pushed to the back of the fridge.

We’ve pinned a few other ideas on our Pinterest Page.

3. Take inventory of your pantry.
Keep track of which grains, beans, and other pantry staples you have lying around so you can easily incorporate them into your meals.

4. Prepare ahead if possible.
Some find it helpful to bundle each meal’s produce separately so you can just grab and start cooking when you’re ready.  If it helps, you might want to peel, cut or otherwise prep a meal in advance.

Keep in mind that not all produce can be prepared in advance and most are best if cooked the same day.  Other items can be prepped ahead of time and tucked into the freezer to be used at a later date.

5. Make large batches of meals and pre-portion the leftovers.
Veggies can go a long way in soups, stews and tomato sauces, all of which freeze well.  They can be prepared in a big batch and then frozen into smaller portion sizes in plastic containers or bags.

6. Find your go-to recipes.
Everyone has their go-to meals for leftover produce. We like to call these “Bottom of the Bin” recipes. Here are a few simple ideas for using whatever produce you have left over:

  • Use veggies as pizza toppings
  • Make a stir-fry
  • Sautee and toss with pasta
  • Make soup, stew, or veggie stock
  • Use veggies in a frittata or egg scramble

Check out our Pinterest Board for Meal Planning ideas and follow us for more inspiration. You can also visit our Storage Tips and Recipes page and search by produce item.

If you have tips you’d like to share with us, we’d love to hear them!
